Suwa-taisha Shrine

The main shrine of the Suwa Shrine is called O-Suwa-sama. There is an Upper Shrine and Lower Shrine, where the Upper Shrine includes the main building (in Suwa) and front building (in Chino). The Lower Shrine includes the Autumn building and Spring building (both in Shimo-Suwa). This brings it to a total of two shrines with four buildings. The main building enshrines Takeminakata-no-kami, as a deity that presides over wind, water, agriculture and hunting.
After the middle ages, he was worshipped as the main presiding god of war of the eastern provinces. It is said that many famous military commanders have brought back portions of the deity to all around the nation.
Due to that, there over 10,000 branch shrines worshipping him throughout the nation. These branch shrines are constructed in the "Suwa-zukuri" style where there is no main shrine at the location. The buildings of the shrine are designated as a national Important Cultural Property. The grove of the shrine is designated as the prefectural natural monument.

Takashima Castle

Takashima Castle was constructed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's vassel Hineno Takayoshi about 400 years ago. At the time of the construction, the water of Lake Suwa reached as far as the sides of the castle, ultimately serving as a moat, which rendered the castle impregnable. It was given the alternate name, "ukishiro (a castle built atop water) of Suwa." The current castle tower was restored in 1970. The first and second floors are a library of local materials of Takashima Castle. The third floor is used as an observatory. Inside the castle is a park famous for its cherry blossoms and wisteria.
